Brisbane's housing market is about to become a buyer's domain, but vendors are not going down so easily

The RP Data Property Pulse released today has shown Brisbane recorded the highest level of "discounting" during April with houses on average selling 6.5 per cent below the original asking price.

Brisbane's level of discounting - the difference between the original listing price and the ultimate sale price - typically hovers between 5 and 6 per cent.

"Vendors are being quite bullish about what prices they can actually get, but clearly the market doesn't agree," Cameron Kusher, RP Data senior researcher, said.

"With discount levels close to 7 per cent most people selling their property are just being completely unrealistic about what they can get."

The level of discounting jumped 1 per cent to 6.5 per cent between December and April, which indicated a slowing market.

The discounting trend saw median house values in Brisbane fall 0.5 per cent in March quarter, according to the report.

However, the unit market held relatively steady; apartment owners tend to be more realistic about sales, Mr Kusher said.

Alleged details emerge of Andrew Johns' racial slur against Timana Tahu

An Aboriginal leader claims Andrew Johns let fly with several racist slurs including "coon, Abbo, nigger and monkey" before winger Timana Tahu's dramatic Origin walk-out.

Sol Bellear - an NRL Indigenous Council board member - says he had spoken to senior members of Tahu's family who revealed the full extent of Johns' intoxicated comments during a Blues bonding session in northern NSW last Wednesday.

"It was all the usual things: 'you back 'c', Abbo, coon, nigger, monkey' - they were were all used," said Bellear.

"It wasn't just directed at (Israel) Folau and GI (Greg Inglis) it was at (Sam) Thaiday and JT (Johnathan Thurston)."

But Johns' manager John Fordham dismissed Bellear's allegations.

"These claims are totally refuted and rejected," he said.

NSW skipper Kurt Gidley also came to Johns' defence, saying his former Newcastle Knights teammate was not a racist.

NRL CEO David Gallop urged Johns and Tahu to settle their differences sooner rather than later.

Sellers Tips

For most of us, our home will probably be the most valuable asset we will ever sell. So it’s important to obtain the maximum price the market is prepared to pay. Anyone can “Sell” your home, but at how many thousands of dollars less than what you should have obtained?

It is important to understand that when you market your property for sale, it is in competition with every other similar property currently on the market. If your property is priced substantially above all the other similar properties on the market place then all that will be achieved will be to help all the other properties to sell at the expense of your property. Buyers don’t just buy the first house they see – ask yourself how many houses you looked at before you bought your home.

So how do you ensure that the highest possible price has been achieved?

Queensland police win new powers to fine for public nuisance offences

THOUSANDS of people could be slapped with fines for offences that would never have attracted police attention in the past under sweeping reforms to police powers.

Experts fear swearing in public, with a fine of $100, will be a major money spinner and could become the weapon of choice for frustrated officers on the beat.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh announced the new powers for the state's police to issue on-the-spot notices for public nuisance offences.

Ms Bligh said the move would increase efficiency, save time and fast-track more important matters in the courts by stopping minor public nuisance offenders from clogging the justice system.

She said the measures, targeting offences such as public urination, disorderly conduct and abusive language, would save the Government between $18 million and $30 million.

A New Zealand dairy farmer wants to sell his creation of milk and Coca-Cola
A dairy farmer in New Zealand has been pitched against soft drink giant Coca-Cola - all because he wants to sell his own fizzy cola-flavored milk drink at an agricultural show. Richard Revell was told by the organisers of the annual National Fieldays in Hamilton - the largest agricultural show in the southern hemisphere - that allowing his product to be sold would violate their contract with the international drinks corporation, the Daily Telegraph of London reported yesterday.

More than 140,000 people visit the annual event, which begins tomorrow, and Revell, from Waikato, had been hoping to launch his new product there.

"We were trying to promote a locally-made milk product in a marquee dedicated to Kiwi innovation. Where's the commercial contradiction?" he said.

"Fieldays said I wouldn't be allowed to sell my drink, only give it away in tiny shot-size glasses.

"Even then, they said I could only have a stall right at the back of the site. It's not worth my while."

Revell has been developing his carbonated drink for the past six years with the help of his nine-year-old daughter Chloe.

He said he came up with the idea after he noticed sales of milk were dropping.

Suzanne Clarkson, speaking on behalf of Coca-Cola, said: "We haven't banned Mr Revell, he's welcome to go to Fieldays.

"He just can't sell his product because we have an exclusive supplier and sponsorship contract."

In a statement, the Fieldays Society added: "We are unable to make an exception in this case as it would be unfair to those prior applicants who have approached us with a similar proposal".

No pear-face lie in woman's fruit tin
A PECKISH New Zealand woman scooped out some tinned pears and was confronted by a freaky slice of fruit. Wendy McMahon was startled to discover the frightening face.

"I thought, 'oh my God, is that a face?'," she told The Southland Times.

"It really kind of shocked me."

Despite feeling "embarrassed", Mrs McMahon left a message with the manufacturer, informing them of her discovery in the Budget brand can.

She took photographs of the unique pear, posted them online and listed the find on Kiwi website, Trade Me.

Mrs McMahon said a spokeswoman for Safeway Traders Ltd was angry she'd "gone public" with the pear and assured her the automated manufacturing process in China meant it was impossible for a tampered pear to slip through the cracks.

Mrs McMahon sent the spokeswoman some photos of the slice which appeared to have two eyes, a nose and a mouth etched into it. The spokeswoman changed her tune, sending the South Island local a $NZ15 ($12) voucher.

Mrs McMahon has sent the slice to Auckland for further investigation by the manufacturer, Heinz-Wattie's, and pulled the Trade Me listing
