Queensland is the place to live

Queensland really is the place to live. The Sunshine State is the nation's fastest growing state, has record low unemployment, a strong economy and, according to the latest Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) median house prices, a very solid property market.

"Many Queensland regions have experienced double digit median house price growth over the 12 months to end the June this year," REIQ chairman Peter McGrath said.

"From Cairns and Townsville to Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the health of the Queensland property market continues to be reflective of the State's robust economic position."

However, the continued strength of the Queensland property market is making it extremely difficult for first home buyers, especially in Southeast Queensland.

Do or die for northern powerhouses

Rugby World Cup 2007

The northern hemisphere rugby powerhouses face a nightmare scenario this week - possible elimination from the World Cup before the quarter-finals.

The biggest scalp would be that of world champions England, who face the in-form Tongans, with defeat meaning the ignominious tag of being the first titleholder to exit at the first hurdle.

However, the most precariously placed is Triple Crown winners Ireland, who have to score four tries and beat Argentina - a side that have not conceded one so far, even in the 17-12 win over France - to progress.

Wales and Scotland also face do-or-die matches.

The Welsh take on the unpredictable Fijians while the Scots face their Six Nations bogey team Italy.

England looked to be a slightly improved unit in their 44-22 victory over Samoa on Saturday, though at one point the Samoans were within four points of them.

Brisbane is rent sting capital

Brisbane is the most expensive Australian capital city for renters, according to a new report.

The Investors Club's national index of rental affordability was based on the proportion of full-time earnings needed to rent an average three-bedroom home in the June quarter.

In Brisbane, 28.3 per cent of earnings would go into rent, compared with 26.8 per cent in Hobart and 25.6 per cent in Perth.

Rent in Sydney would account for 24.8 per cent of earnings, followed by Adelaide on 24.5 per cent and Melbourne on 23.3 per cent.

Car Review

Lamborghini’s multi-million dollar supercar

Lamborghini will build just 20 of its jet fighter-inspired Reventon supercars.

The Lamborghini Reventon is the fastest, most expensive and most exclusive Lamborghini ever built.

Not even a multi-million dollar price tag could deter the 20 select customers who have already snapped up the jet fighter-inspired Reventon, which is based on the $600,000 Murcielago coupe.

The Reventon has already sold out with each car selling for 1 million Euros, plus local taxes and other charges. In Australia, that would mean the Lamborghini Reventon would sell for around $2.5 million by the time you accounted for the exchange rate and added GST, import duty, luxury tax and stamp duty.

And finally.....

A recent scientific study found that women find different male faces attractive depending on where they are in their menstrual cycle.

For example, when a woman is ovulating she will prefer a man with rugged, masculine features.

However when she is menstruating, she prefers a man doused in petrol and set on fire, with scissors stuck in his eye and a cricket stump shoved up his backside.

Profiteroles with chocolate custard

Serving size: Serves 10 or more

Course: Dessert

INGREDIENTS

¾ cup water
75g butter
½ teaspoon salt
¾ cup plain flour, sifted
4 eggs

Chocolate custard
¼ cup custard powder
2 cups milk
200g dark chocolate, chopped, plus 100g extra, finely chopped
2 tablespoons caster sugar

Mocha icing
200g dark chocolate, chopped
¼ cup cream
1½ tablespoons espresso coffee

METHOD

  1. Preheat your oven to hot, 200°C. Lightly grease 2 baking trays.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine water, butter and salt. Bring to the boil. Add sifted flour and beat with a wooden spoon over high heat for about 1 minute, until mixture forms a ball and comes away from sides of pan.
  3. Transfer mixture to a small bowl. Cool slightly. Using an electric mixer, beat in eggs, one at a time, until thick and glossy.
  4. Dollop heaped teaspoonfuls onto trays, spacing evenly. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until puffed and golden. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
  5. Chocolate custard
Meanwhile, in a saucepan, combine custard powder with a little milk to form a smooth paste. Blend in remaining milk, chocolate and sugar until smooth. Stir over a medium heat until mixture boils and thickens. Reduce heat. Simmer for 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in extra chocolate. Cover surface of custard with plastic wrap. Cool to room temperature.
  6. Mocha icing
Combine all ingredients in small saucepan. Stir over low heat for 2-3 minutes, until smooth. Cool.
  7. Cut a small opening in the base of each profiterole, using a small plain nozzle, pipe chocolate custard into each profiterole. Spread mocha icing over tops. Chill until ready to serve.

Top tips

  • When profiteroles are cooked, pierce each with a skewer to allow steam to escape and prevent them from becoming soggy.

Drought Proof Garden!

Water-wise gardens are becoming more and more important as the drought bites hard and water restrictions are in place in many part of the country.

Choose succulents

Succulents store water in their leaves, stems or roots to help them withstand the severe drought conditions of their native habitats. They also have other adaptations to reduce water loss through transpiration, such as hairy or waxy surfaces.

Succulents have an amazing diversity of leaf shapes and colours. They create strong focal points in minimalist designs and their evergreen foliage makes them ideal for small urban gardens. They also make ideal container plants.

Caring for succulents

  • The ideal potting mix for succulents in containers should contain half coarse sand and half free-draining potting mix. Keep the mix barely moist when planting and don't water for the first week. A six month slow release fertiliser such as Osmocote is recommended.
  • A well-drained sunny aspect is the ideal situation for growing succulents. Insufficient sunlight will cause the succulents to become leggy, distorted and lacking in colour. Place containers under the eaves in cold areas which experience considerable winter rain, but in positions where they still receive sun.
  • Because succulents are often brittle, stems or leaves may break off when handled. Don't worry, succulents grow easily from cuttings. Simply set aside the broken piece for about a week or so, until it dries out. Then insert into a tray or pot filled with 50:50 potting mix and washed river sand. Before you know it, you'll have a new plant!

Rudd's wife under attack by UK unions

Kevin Rudd's wife, Therese Rein, faces new claims her privately owned job-placement company will strip workers of guaranteed conditions.

Ingeus's British arm, WorkDirections UK, is under attack from British unions after it won contracts worth $198 million to become the biggest provider of welfare-to-work programs for up to one million disabled people.

The unions fear WorkDirections UK will not give its workers conditions designed to protect staff when they transfer to a new employer or cover areas such as index-linked pensions, sick pay and holidays.
