River committee holds first meeting

A new panel to provide Noosa River management advice to Council and Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) held its first meeting this week.
The Noosa River Stakeholder Advisory Committee has started a process to identify its priorities for improving river management.
Anchoring, mooring and live-aboards were among a wide range of issues related to the river that were discussed at the meeting.
“It was great to be able to attend the committee’s first meeting as an observer and see their enthusiasm for the river and for developing solutions to the big issues,” Mayor Clare Stewart said. Read more.

Venues for next month’s Councillor Coffee Chats have been confirmed. Councillors will be at Cooroy Harvest Fresh, Cooroy; Raw Energy, Peregian Beach, and Black Ant Café, Kin Kin from 9am to 10.30am on May 14. There is no need to book, just pop along for a chat.

Playground build starts
|
Construction of the Hinterland Adventure Playground at Cooroy is now under way, with planned completion - weather permitting - by Christmas.
Council received $2.78M from the State Government toward the cost of the nature-based playground, which includes a double flying-fox, climbing tower with slide, climbing structures with swings, water play area, picnic shelters and an amenities block.

A draft Climate Change Response Plan for the Shire is among the projects open for comment on Council’s YourSay Noosa website currently.
It sets out actions to boost the community’s resilience to hotter temperatures, bushfires, extreme weather events and other climate change impacts.
Residents can also comment on the new local law Council has proposed to manage short-stay letting and home-hosted accommodation, plus the Walking and Cycling Strategy.

Quarry concerns heard
|
Our Kin Kin roundtable continues to work through community concerns about the Kin Kin quarry. Council has now issued $160,000 in fines for alleged breaches of the Quarry Management Plan.
To help Council address additional Kin Kin matters, current liaison officer Ian Williams has moved to five days a week.
He will continue to work with residents on the quarry matter, plus be a conduit between Council and the Kin Kin community on general Kin Kin issues. For Quarry Management Plan details, see Council’s website.

Works for Cooroy
|
We’ve been busy upgrading amenities at the Cooroy Camphor Laurel Shed and Cooroy Badminton Club.
Council received $20,000 in Works for Queensland funding from the Queensland Government and a $20,000 Federal Government grant to provide new flooring, tiling, painting and a new kitchen at the Badminton Club.
The Camphor Laurel Shed upgrades included new amenities, electrical and hydraulics. The Cooroy projects are among a host of works delivered with Works for Queensland and Unite and Recover funding.

Work starts at Peregian
|
Work has started on the new $3 million Community House at Peregian Beach – part of the Rufous Street Precinct, Stage 3.
Mayor Clare Stewart said the legacy project would be a valuable addition to the Peregian Beach community. It’s part of a $10 million-plus investment in the Rufous Street precinct.
Once the new Community House is built, work can start on the expansion of the Peregian Digital Hub into the existing Community House facility. Read more.
