Dear [subscriber-firstname],
Welcome to the May edition of the Library Vibe.
As we enjoy the current sunshine, our thoughts are with those who suffered property damage and loss of power during the recent storm event that left Pittwater categorised as a Natural Disaster Zone.
We understand that you may have had difficulty getting to the library while the storms were on or you may not have been able to access your account online. If this situation has resulted in overdue items or late fees, please let us know so we can look at resolving this for you.
On the two days when the storm was at its height, library visitor numbers were almost as high as they had been when the current library building first opened.
Fortunately Mona Vale Library was unaffected by the storms and provided a welcome refuge from the weather as well as a place to access power, charge your phones and access the Internet through our public access PCs and free WiFi.
We hope that all those affected are now back on their feet. |

Our new library system and catalogue will go live on Thursday 4 June. You will be able to enjoy the benefits of many new features including: searching for books and other items in the library as well as articles in our databases direct from our catalogue.
System improvements include email alerts to remind you when your books are due as well as overdue and reservation pick-up notices. So please ensure we have your most current email address on our system.
Whilst we are transitioning to the new system there may be some minor disruption to services. Please note that as borrowing will be done offline, the self-service kiosks may not be available for a short time. Also, our online catalogue will be turned off on Sunday 29 May until 4 June, when it will have a whole new look. Please call or email us if you want to find a book, renew a loan or pay your account.
The upgrade will also mean we are unable to issue new or replacement borrower cards from 23 May until 4 June. Applications for membership will be accepted; however membership cards will be posted out after 4 June.
If you have lost your card, just present your Driver’s Licence or other proof of current address in the meantime.
Once the new system goes live, we will host information sessions to assist you with searching the catalogue, renewing and reserving items and checking your accounts. |

As part of the National Trust Heritage Festival celebrations this month, the Library is presenting a photographic display of the 'Honour Rolls of Pittwater'.
Honour rolls were often the first type of memorial erected to honour those who enlisted in WW1. The Honour rolls featured have been found in local churches, schools, surf clubs and shire offices.
We are inviting members of the public to view the Honour rolls in the hope they may have some knowledge about the soldiers honoured on these boards. The display will be held during Library hours from 4 to 17 May 2015. |

To celebrate Library and Information Week 2015, we are hosting a Library Expo on Thursday 28 May from 12 to 2pm.
The expo will showcase the library, focussing on its leisure and recreational services and facilities.
Visitors will receive a map of the library and will earn a stamp after visiting each of the ‘information stations’. Visitors with a completed stamp card will go into a draw for a book voucher which will be drawn at 2pm. If you are not already a library member we can take your application and register you once we go live on our new system.
Come along and find out about eBooks, DVDs, Runarounds, Book Clubs, Reading Groups, and children’s activities; learn about our Technology Centre, and how you can participate in building the library’s collections by using our online suggestion form. |

New books at the library
Check out our eBooks and eAudio. You may be able to find a copy of the book you are looking for here. Details on the library website:

Community Chess in the Library
Library patrons can now play a game of chess in the library if they have a partner or they can participate in ‘community chess’.
This is where you make a move then someone else (unknown) takes the next move. Once you have taken your move you need to flip the card over so the next person can take a turn.
Have a go next time you are in the library and also check out our display of vintage board games.
Knitted Squares
Our Friday knitting group, Pittwater Stitchers, would love some more knitted squares to be made up into rugs for Wrap with Love. Just drop your squares into the library and we will pass them on. Squares for wraps are to measure 10 inches x 10 inches (25 cm x 25 cm). You can find more information about Wrap With Love at www.artsandcraftsnsw.com.au/Wrap.htm
Kindness is catching
Mona Vale library is an official drop-off point for the Winter Care Kits for Sydney’s homeless. The care kits have been developed by Seaforth resident, Linda Pang who is asking people to donate nine simple items that will make life a tiny bit more comfortable for the homeless this winter. The packs contain:
- Small pack of tissues
- Face washer
- Comb
- Socks
- Travel-sized disinfectant
- Refillable water bottle
- Travel-sized shampoo and conditioner
- Small box of bandages
Fit for the Future
Pittwater Council is seeking community feedback prior to submitting a proposal to the NSW government on its position in relation to local government reform. Council has provided a number of opportunities for the community to have its say including a display at Mona Vale Library. You can pick up an information booklet, and then have your say by completing the survey before 5 June.
Other information displays are at Council’s customer service centres and at Avalon Community Library or you can provide feedback via the online survey.

One of our members was delighted to find that Mona Vale Library was unaffected by the recent storms and could deliver more than the usual services:
“If ever anyone doubts the value of a public library, my experience shows that they are indeed an essential public service, at so many levels: infrastructure, facilities, even heat and light!.”
Alan Smith, Newport resident. |
