CEO Report

A matter of trust

Many of our customers tell similar stories to Mark Barden’s (see below). After meeting Hugh Beattie, myself or another Practical Systems staff member at a field day or industry event, they take a considerable risk.

They invest in an unknown platform that is often the first software application they have purchased for their business. In many cases such as Mark’s, our customers take up new technology simply to use the Practical Systems platform.

That’s a lot of trust to place in something you know very little about. It got me thinking: Why do our clients put their trust in us?

First, I think it’s because we know what we’re on about. We know farmers, and we know farming in Australia. We know what information you need to make an informed decision, be it for financial, livestock, or farm management.

We’ve been delivering practical technology to regional Australia for 25 years, but this doesn’t mean we sell you the app and send you packing.

25th Anniversary Roadshow

Practical Systems takes to the road in 2018

Practical Systems' focus has always been on-farm. Whether it is industry events, running agricultural enterprises, or delivering our products and training to your door: providing solutions where and when they are needed is what we've done best. At Practical Systems, we attribute our success to our customers and their willing involvement in ensuring our software is exactly what regional and rural businesses need.

In 2018, we are celebrating 25 years of delivering practical technology to regional Australia. In recognition of your contribution, we are taking to the road and bringing our anniversary celebration to you. Throughout the year our Anniversary Roadshow will hold on-farm demonstrations and training days in key locations around the country.

Lead by Practical Systems CEO Mark Morton, at each location our team will provide our software users in the local area with the opportunity to participate in group training workshops or on-farm one-on-one consultations. For members of the public who are curious about Stockbook, after lunch, we will hold a demonstration of the software's  sophisticated livestock management capabilities.

The roadshows will commence with a visit to Southern Queensland, where we will drop in on Anthony and Chantal Winters at Macquarie Wagyu in Leyburn on March 20 and Jamie Sturrock in Drillham on March 22. In April, we are planning to head to Southern NSW followed by the annual Wagyu Association conference and Beef 2018 in May.

If you are interested in hosting an event during our roadshow, please get in touch with Mark Morton on 0427 525 842 or email mark@practicalsystems.com.au

Client Profile

Growing together to build better business

Mark and Janet Barden run ‘Glenwarrie’ and ‘Tyrone’ near Edgeroi NSW and are broadacre winter crop specialists, growing faba beans, durum wheat, bread wheat, chickpeas and canola.

In 1996, Mark attended FarmFest in Narrabri and purchased Cashbook and Farmbook in a package deal.

“It also included the fastest, largest, most modern state-of-the-art desktop computer,” Mark said.

“It had a whole 16mb of RAM, and we nearly needed a new office to fit it in, the computer was so large.

“The deal included start-up training and I think that cost them dearly, I was totally computer illiterate.

“Everything I know about computers I have learned from Practical Systems.”

Meet the Staff

Vernon van Duijnhoven

Our Senior Developer Vernon van Duijnhoven has been a part of the Practical Systems team for 17 years. Before joining Practical Systems in March 2001, Vernon worked in software engineering roles in the laboratory automation and radio telemetry systems fields.

Vernon has been involved in the development of all our products, and his role covers all aspects of the software development from the initial product design, right through to product release and ongoing maintenance and support.

What has changed the most during your time at Practical Systems?

The biggest change would have to be the migration away from purely desktop-based software to more cloud and mobile-based applications.

What has been your biggest challenge in your role as Senior Developer?

Consistently producing effective, flexible and usable software that caters for a diverse customer base.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

No single event stands out. However, it does make you proud to see a user excited about using something you’ve created, even if it is just a new feature in existing software.

If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?

Time manipulation/time travel. I think it would be great to be able to go back and witness historical events first-hand and to see what the future holds.
