It’s a Thursday afternoon. 3.30pm. We are assembled around my dining room table. Eight of us. I am excited, I have been looking forward to discussing Foal’s Bread. I grew up in the Australian bush; I can identify with so much of this novel. It’s 5.30pm. They’ve all gone home. Nobody felt the same way about the novel as I did. But it doesn’t matter. Foal’s Bread had been the catalyst for an indepth exploration of the social mores of another era. Sometimes tears are shared as personal stories are revealed, helping the rest of us get a clearer picture and understanding of an issue. At the time we don’t realise how this brings us closer together as we feel more comfortable with each other and less afraid of being honest and open in our opinions and revelations. Something special is developing in our group.
